Following previous releases through Midway (tie-ins that followed the videogame storyline) and Malibu (stories taking liberties with the source material), Mortal Kombat returns to the printed page via DC’s Mortal Kombat X! Linking to the tenth entrant in the videogame series due next year, Mortal Kombat X is written by Shawn Kittelsen with Dexter Soy on art duties and arrives on 7 January 2015.
Shawn Kittelsen: “NetherRealm has been super gracious with letting us tell the best stories so we can tell. We have 25 years between MK and MK X, and they were really cool about letting us play and the only thing they asked was, “Are you going to make room for the new characters?” And absolutely. I feel like there’s a real opportunity there tell new stories about the old characters we love through the new characters when we meet them and see how they relate to each other.
Cassie Cage is a great example. How much can you learn about Johnny and Sonya by meeting their daughter and then seeing their relationship with her. You know, how does she become a badass?
