Cover Of The Week 2013: #2
It’s round two of 2013′s battle for the best comic book cover eye candy!
We kick off with a heroic shot of Cable and the guys on Cable And X-Force #3 by Salvador Larroca using shadow to add drama to the image. Alex Ross has produced connecting cover art for the new Star Wars series from Dark Horse, and issue one debuted this week featuring portraits of Luke and Leia with Han, Chewie, Vader and the droids. Constantine and the Justice League Dark came into contact with the Phantom Stranger in issue #4, and Jae Lee featured Constantine and the Stranger in his great, symbol fuelled variant, while the pressure is piled on Hawkeye in another dramatic (and brilliant) Arthur Adams cover for Secret Avengers (#36). Batman makes his first Cover Of The Week appearance this week on Detective Comics #16 by Jason Fabok, with a scary image of the Dark Knight succumbing to the effects of the Joker. Avengers Arena #3 features another fine homage as the iconic logo is set aflame à la Hunger Games, courtesy of Greg Horn, and this week’s big seller, Superior Spider-Man #1, almost makes it to the top of the pile with it’s Ryan Stegman, regular cover – a dark, moody depiction of thew new Spider-Man crawling towards us, clearly indicating this is not the Spidey we’re familiar with.
The winner of Week 2, however, is…
…Legends Of The Dark Knight #4 by Jheremy Raapack! The book is adorned with an exciting, ragged Batman hurtling towards the reader as the gothic skyline bends in behind him. Nice.

Darth Vader’s visit
Darth Vader was a big hit when he visited ACE Comics in Colchester on Saturday.
Apart from the weather bearing striking resemblance to the ocean exoplanet Kamino, and having trouble finding enough parking spaces in a row for his Star Destroyer, the Dark Lord of the Sith was on hand with his Imperial forces including Stormtroopers, Biker Scouts, Royal Guards, AT-AT Commanders and Death Star Troopers to spread some seasonal cheer.
Boba Fett was also there to ensure that the Wookiee, the Ewok and the Tusken Raider, who were up to entertaining the queue, didn’t step out of line.
Star Warriors, who assisted in the arrival of the Empire, were collecting for Action On Pre-Eclampsia, a charity close to their hearts, raising awareness and improving care for those suffering from Pre-Eclampsia.

It’s time for the penultimate Cover Of The Week for 2012!
This week the comic store shelves have been truly spoiled, from dramatic imagery like Cliff Chiang‘s impressive use of reflection on Wonder Woman #15, to the classically posed He-Man and Battlecat on Dave Wilkins‘ He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #5 cover.
Paolo Rivera and David Aja added more stunning fronts to their runs of covers on Daredevil (#21) and Hawkeye (#6) respectively, while, with issue #3, Stéphane Roux provided another classic, movie-poster styled cover for her already impressive collection of Star Wars: Agent Of The Empire – Hard Targets fronts.
Hellblazer #298 featured a fine example of artist Simon Bisley‘s work as the ‘Death And Cigarettes’ storyline begins and Mike Del Mundo provided the cleverest use of imagery this week with his brilliant cover for X-Men Legacy #3.
It was pretty hard to pick a winner from this exceptionally strong selection of comic book covers, but we have gone for…
…The Unwritten #4 by New York based, Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu! It’s a beautiful piece of work depicting a harpy and the dangers facing Tom in Hades!
Congrats to Yuko and DC Vertigo, they get the paper crown for this week!
