The Best Comic Book Covers of 2013 – Week #39
Highly skilled Boston-based graphic designer James Biggie has provided a super-stylized front for ‘GI Joe: Special Missions #7′, and if there’s something we love, it’s super-stylization! Depicting Dreadnok ‘Torch’, Biggie’s cover really stands apart visually from the rest of this week’s releases and works beautifully as a piece of contemporary art, let alone a comic book cover.
GREEN LANTERN #23.4 SINESTRO #1
With a ringing endorsement from none other than Biff himself, Billy Tan’s cover for ‘Green Lantern #23.4′ is our pick of the DC 3D pile. With Hal Jordan otherwise detained in the background, the 3D makes great use of Sinestro conjuring a spiked, chain bolas, sending the said weapon out towards the reader.
Producing come of the best work around at the moment, ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series artist Sara Pichelli has presented us with what is sure to be an iconic image of Neil Gaiman’s Spawn character Angela on her debut in the Marvel Universe for the front of issue #6. Standing in the gaping jaws of a (presumably recently deceased) beast, Angela’s determined appearance and cold stare are almost enough to force people to buy this comic book, or face the consequences!
The second Image comic to feature ‘sex’ in the title, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s ‘Sex Criminals #1′ features a fantastic cover by Zdarsky himself, using minimal design elements perfectly to produce a front that is both stylish and classy, without courting controversy. And the covers for the next few issues of this well-received book look just as good.
Reminiscent of the New York themed movie posters of the first 3 Spider-Man movies, Dave Marquez’s city-based face for ‘Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #27′ is a great example of using scale, as Miles swings towards a glass-fronted skyscraper, his reflection swinging back at him. All this is set against a brilliant dusky sky holding a handful of flying birds. Beautiful.
2013′s 39th Cover Of The Week Winner…
Cover by PAOLO RIVERA
Eisner Award-winning comic book artist Paolo Rivera is no.1 this week, thanks to his amazing, retro, ‘Weird Science Fantasy’ front cover for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy #6′! Showcasing the vintage sci-fi styled Guardians in a typically perillous situation (this time, being sucked out of a hole in their ship, into space!!), the period art style is imitated wonderfully. And if you look carefully, you’ll see Tony Stark’s boxer shorts!
Congrats to Paolo and Marvel, they get the paper crown this week!
