It’s only been nine months since the whole DC continuity was reset and restarted from number one – in order to tie up all loose ends / multiple universes / etc and get everybody on the same page. Now, this week, sees the new launch of Earth Two. With DC treading these waters once more, editor Pat McCallum has been talking up the book, which hits shelves today…
“One of the great things about EARTH TWO is that while it’s very much plugged into the larger DC Universe, it’s also somewhat self contained. You can really cut loose with the storytelling and not sweat how it impacts other shared-universe titles. James Robinson and Nicola Scott, the creators on the title, have taken full advantage of that. So when things start to really hit the fan in Earth Two, they’re going to hit in jarring, unapologetic ways. Characters will die, landmarks will burn and the good guys won’t always save the day. Aside from entertaining readers, the goal of every issue is to make fans put it down and think ‘I can’t believe they just did that.’ It’s gonna be a fun ride…unless you’re in one of the parts of Earth 2 that’s on fire.”
DC have posted a couple of soundbites from artists involved with Earth 2.
Nicola Scott talks about her involvement with the Earth 2 world:
“EARTH 2 is a big step in a new direction for me. I haven’t previously had many opportunities to work on a truly epic scale but working with James [Robinson], on some of his favorite characters and in our own alternate Earth Two world, is providing me with that platform. Everything is up for grabs, nothing is for certain and it will slowly reveal itself over the coming months. James is creating a great balance between action and drama and I have the great pleasure of bringing it to life.”
“If there’s one thing my adult pro self wanted out of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, it was a return to the days of Infinite Earths. And it starts here. Jim designed the coolest costumes and it was a hoot of a sandbox to play in for a few hours. They are still Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, though, but that was always the fun, wasn’t it? The same but different. My eight-year son got a real kick out of me drawing this, just like my eight-year old self would have!”
Much of the news round-up comes from C2E2 – the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, which took place this weekend.
Dark Horse have announced their plans to co-publish Athena Voltaire with Sequential Pulp Comics. Athena Voltaire is a 1930′s heroine originally launched as a part of the Modern Tales family of webcomics in 2002. The title was nominated for a Best Digital Comic Eisner Award in 2005 and included in St. Martin’s ‘The Year’s Best Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga (2004 edition)’. The good news for fans of Voltaire is that Dark Horse have plans for the character up to 2015!
Dark Horse have also announced a new horror/thriller in the form of Tim Seeley’s Ex Sanguine. Seeley, famous for creating ‘Hack/Slash’ and his work on ‘The Occultist’ and ‘The Guild’ amongst others, said “Ex Sanguine is my take on the vampire-romance genre, but instead of being full of longing and anguished staring, it’s full of brutal flirtations between two savage predators, one a vampire, one a serial killer.” Look out for ‘Ex Sanguine’ in November.
DC featured many of their panels live on their blog, which can still be viewed after the event. The panels were discussing the ‘New 52′, ‘Before Watchmen’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Comics for Kids’. Newman ‘Joker’!
There were a whole host of Marvel announcements. Artist Khoi Pham will be joining ‘Scarlet Spider’ from July, while Ryan Stegman will move to ‘Fantastic Four’. There’s to be a new Hawkeye series from Matt Fraction and David Aja, who’ve worked together previously on ‘Iron Fist’. In the Ultimate universe there will be a crossover event called ‘Divided We Fall’ running through Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and the Ultimates while ‘Everything Burns’, a seven part event from Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Alan Davis and Carmine di Giandomenico will run through ‘The Mighty Thor’ and ‘Journey Into Mystery’.
