DC Annuals to look out for in August…

DC Comics

Over the past couple of weeks, DC have started to announce a number of the annuals going on sale this August.

Detective Comics Annual #1
Detective Comics Annual #1

Batman group editor Mike Marts: “This special Annual, written by Tony S. Daniel and illustrated by Romano Molenaar and Sandu Florea, pits the Dark Knight against the Black Mask—a Gotham City villain most recently seen during the Night of the Owls!”

Superman Annual #1
Superman Annual #1

Writer Keith Giffen: “Ever wonder what’s out there beyond the farthest known reaches of the DC Universe? Superman’s about to get the answer to that – in spades – as we introduce an entirely new cosmic realm and drop him into the middle of it. The DC Universe’s cosmic presence is about to be dramatically expanded and it all starts with … a game show?”

Editor Pat McCallum: “Captured and transported to an alien world, Superman will fight for his life against the galaxy’s best equipped bounty hunters. It’s all part of a planet-wide reality game, televised live and used to raise money for…something. Bonus: Some unexpected help in the form of a deep-cover agent of the Green Lantern Corps!”

The Flash Annual #1
The Flash Annual #1

Editor Matt Idelson: “One by one, the Flash’s rogues have been returning to the pages of The Flash — along with some new faces, like the mysterious Turbine. But surely everyone’s been waiting for the main event, and we’re thrilled to tell you it’s coming your way in The Flash Annual! The reunited Rogues hate the Flash just as much as they always have (if not more) — but this time, they’re gunning for Captain Cold, too! It’s all-out mayhem, everybody vs. everybody, with an even bigger and nastier threat preparing to swing into the fray at exactly the wrong time…

We couldn’t be more excited about this one, and we hope you will be too! It really is a story so big, it needed the giant size of an Annual to contain it… and we’re still kinda worried it might blow the cover off. So please use caution when purchasing.”

Green Lantern Annual #1
Green Lantern Annual #1

Writer Geoff Johns: “Working with [artist] Ethan [Van Sciver] means things change, things are revealed and new characters rise. It’s the madness of our collaborations that started all this and will continue it. The universe is a dangerous place. And it’s about to get even more so…”

Editor Matt Idelson: “Green Lantern Annual #1 not only brings the Black Hand story to a truly unexpected close, but sets up the major events that will heavily impact the entire Green Lantern franchise in a truly devastating way and there’s no more appropriate pairing for this book than reuniting Geoff Johns with Ethan Van Sciver, given the Green Lantern history those two have under their belts.”

Justice League International Annual #1
Justice League International Annual #1

Co-writer Dan DiDio: “This is the final fate of this incarnation of the Justice League International. There will be also be a big showdown of events that played out in the final issues of O.M.A.C. The ramifications of this will be felt across the board and will lead directly into a major event spanning across all the Justice League group titles later this year.”

Weekend Round-Up 16th April

News Team

Much of the news round-up comes from C2E2 – the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, which took place this weekend.

Dark Horse have announced their plans to co-publish Athena Voltaire with Sequential Pulp Comics. Athena Voltaire is a 1930′s heroine originally launched as a part of the Modern Tales family of webcomics in 2002. The title was nominated for a Best Digital Comic Eisner Award in 2005 and included in St. Martin’s ‘The Year’s Best Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga (2004 edition)’. The good news for fans of Voltaire is that Dark Horse have plans for the character up to 2015!

Dark Horse have also announced a new horror/thriller in the form of Tim Seeley’s Ex Sanguine. Seeley, famous for creating ‘Hack/Slash’ and his work on ‘The Occultist’ and ‘The Guild’ amongst others, said “Ex Sanguine is my take on the vampire-romance genre, but instead of being full of longing and anguished staring, it’s full of brutal flirtations between two savage predators, one a vampire, one a serial killer.” Look out for ‘Ex Sanguine’ in November.

DC featured many of their panels live on their blog, which can still be viewed after the event. The panels were discussing the ‘New 52′, ‘Before Watchmen’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Comics for Kids’. There was also a feed for ‘DC Collectibles’, who unveiled some new merchandise including Arkham City figures of ‘Mr. Freeze’, ‘Catwoman’, ‘The Riddler’, ‘The Mad Hatter’, ‘Hush’ and ‘Killer Croc’. There was a special, four-figure ‘Flashpoint’ boxset and Justice League figures ‘Aquaman’, ‘Cyborg’, ‘Flash’ and a ‘Parademonon’ on display. Also on the way are a number of great statues including some new ‘Batman: Black and White’ releases, ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ patina statues, ‘Green Lantern Animated’, ‘Before Watchmen’ and new entries in the ‘Ame-Comi Girls’ digital series statues. ‘MAD’ fans can look forward to addition to the ‘”Just-Us” League of Stupid Heroes’ figures, including a rather excellent Alfred E. Newman ‘Joker’!

There were a whole host of Marvel announcements. Artist Khoi Pham will be joining ‘Scarlet Spider’ from July, while Ryan Stegman will move to ‘Fantastic Four’. There’s to be a new Hawkeye series from Matt Fraction and David Aja, who’ve worked together previously on ‘Iron Fist’. In the Ultimate universe there will be a crossover event called ‘Divided We Fall’ running through Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and the Ultimates while ‘Everything Burns’, a seven part event from Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Alan Davis and Carmine di Giandomenico will run through ‘The Mighty Thor’ and ‘Journey Into Mystery’. Matt Fraction is to be joined on ‘Defenders’ by artist Jamie McKelvie and Remy Lebeau will return as Gambit gets a new ongoing series from James Asmus and Clay Mann this August.
